CSCI C181 / MA C115: Sample Assignments
Description | Assignments | Assessment
Hypertext Markup Language
Students will learn the basic skills necessary to author a Web Page through the use of HyperTextMarkup Language (HTML); and will learn to integrate text, graphics and hypertext links. Students will complete lessons, which will result in the development of their own personal home page. The skills learned during these lessons are basic to Web development.
Sample Assignment
Objectives:
- write HTML code to create Web pages with common page elements.
- write HTML code for images, tables, forms, and frames that is accessibility compliant with Section 508.
- specify relative link paths that correctly reflect the directory structure of a web site.
- use tables to format the layout of a Web page.
The midterm assignment asks students to create a personal website, three to five pages, that includes very specific parameters. A grade sheet [pdf] is made available so they know what is required of the project. Students work on this project as the culmination of the first half of the class. Two weeks before the deadline, students are organized into peer review groups and asked to arrange a meeting time online using AIM or Tapped In. Peer review guidelines and criteria are discussed in class and students are asked to submit a chat log of their time spent together. Students are encouraged to post their problems and challenges in the HTML Help forum and receive feedback from the instructor and classmates on a regular basis.

Assessment
The purpose of this assignment is to give students an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of basic HTML tags, coding practices, and design elements. Websites are assessed for mechanical mastery (HTML code) and style (design and layout). A grade sheet is made available to the students ahead of time and is used by the instructor to make comments. It is then returned to the student with the final grade for the project.
