INFS P051: Sample Assignments

Web Page Design Assignments

One example of an assignment is the troubleshooting case study. I created 10 cases that included one html file and at least one image. The errors become progressively more complicated. Case 1 is the easiest and case 10 the hardest. Each file has at least 4 problems (intentional ones anyhow!). I originally planned on assigning cases to students based on my perception of their ability. What I decided to do, however, was to let them choose their own problems. I ask the to work in pairs or trios, explained the setup and let them loose. They were to have about 45 minutes to work through as many cases as they could, documenting and fixing the errors they came across.

The students tend to pick problems that match their skill levels. Some go right to the top and picked #9 or #10 while others start off with easier cases. I walk around a little, answering some questions, giving tips as needed, but not showing them where the errors are. If they finish one case, they move on to another one.

It is exciting to watch how involved they get as they scrutinize the code, discuss possibilities, work out solutions, and document evidence. Some mention that they feel like they learn a lot working through this exercise. I plan on working in a troubleshooting "warm-up" for each class period when I offer the class next semester.

Assessment

Students in this class create a personal website for their midterm and work with a "client" for their final website project. The goal is to give them an authentic audience and experience as they learn to apply the skills they have learned to a real life project. Since it is a skills-based course, the proof of student learning can be seen in the outcome of their projects. Examples of past projects can be seen in my student web design showcase.
