Cerro Coso Community College students in Professor Debby Kilburn’s Introduction to Lego Robotics class had an opportunity to see real-life applications of the things they are learning in the classroom when they spent half a day Friday, December 8 touring the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and the robotics laboratory of the Weapons Division.
The four-hour tour included visits to the Integrated Battlespace Arena, Global Positioning System, Advanced Systems, Lauritsen Labs and a Shootable Remote Threat Ground Target demonstration using a remote-controlled truck at Mirror Lake. Seventeen students were able to see how the things they are learning in the classroom can evolve into practical approaches to daily life. Students saw real-world applications of simulated computer modeling, robotics, GPS applications, autonomous vehicles, laser technology, and many other things. “What Friday did for my guys was to show them that there are real world jobs where they can apply all of the things they love to do,” Kilburn said, adding that one of her students couldn’t believe that people actually get paid to create things like remote-controlled vehicles. by Nicole Trull, Rocketeer II Editor |
